LES MIS—CRITICS VERSUS AUDIENCE.

LES MIS—CRITICS VERSUS AUDIENCE The risks of making a movie of LES MIS included, of course, the risk that the movie would receive the same kind of harsh reviews that it did in the theater. The movie has already received some harsh reviews even before the opening. Todd McCarthy in his review of the movie in The Hollywood Reporter calls it “bombastic” and says that the stars “wage a Sisyphean battle against musical diarrhea.” At heart, I think that he speaks for many critics when he criticizes audiences for liking Les Mis: “As the enduring success of this property has shown, there are large, emotionally susceptible segments of the population ready to swallow this sort of thing, but that doesn’t mean it’s good.”
