MY COMEDY OF ERRORS MOMENT.

MY COMEDY OF ERRORS MOMENT. As a twin, I have had only one COMEDY OF ERRORS moment. (I define a COMEDY OF ERRORS moment as one in which mistaken identity leads to dramatic consequences.) Mine came over 50 years ago. Elmer and I were beginning sixth grade. It was the first time we had been in different classes. At lunch time on the first two days, I met him by a pillar near the cafeteria. The third day I was standing by the pillar when I was suddenly yanked away by a very angry teacher. I still remember being hauled away by a firm grip on my ear, but I suppose I was simply grabbed by the shoulder. It turned out that Elmer had been told two days in a row by the teacher not to stand by the pillar (who knows why) and forgotten to mention it to me. The teacher was famed among the students for her bad temper, but after that day she was always very nice to Elmer and me.

I love this story. Elmer also tells it with you being hauled away by your ear.

I thought there was another incident that would likely qualify as a COMEDY OF ERRORS moment. According to the lore on my mothers’ side of the family parents may not have met if the comedy had continued. My mother’s sister, Liz, was in the same law school section as my father’s brother, Phil (author of this blog, obviously). Liz had somewhat kept her distance from Phil because he was so odd– half the time he was so friendly and pleasant, and the other half he acted like a stranger. One day all four siblings happened to run into each other in the cafeteria; Phil’s schizophrenic behavior was explained in a very obvious way. This was the first time my parents met.

This story may have been embellished over the years, but I still like it.
