TOP TEN LISTS.

TOP TEN LISTS. I know that a lot of people reject the whole idea of having a favorite story. It seems fashionable to condemn lists of ten best books or 100 favorite movies. I like those lists because I can search out ideas for good books or movies that I am not familiar with. And thinking about what belongs on the list means time is spent on discussing really good things which deserve the attention.

I’ve learned to approach certain top x lists in a different way than I used to. I can’t tell you how many times I balked at a “Top 50 Albums” or “100 Greatest Guitar Solos of ALL TIME” list when I was in middle school. There were always the generally accepted classics and then the twist number one that made you wonder what the editors were thinking.

Now I know that the crazy number ones are to drum up controversy and interest when you can’t think up real content. I do agree with you that there are some great, well-researched lists out there that can turn you on to new and interesting stuff.
