FAVORITE STORIES (COMMENT). Nick commented that he, Mary Jane and I have the same favorite story: Joyce’s THE DEAD. He asked what it meant that his two favorite stories both remain unresolved. My second favorite story remains “The Supper at Elsinore” by Isaak Dinesen. I would say that the common denominator of my favorite two stories is a dramatic change in mood.

  1. Mary Jane says:

On our first date, Phil and I established that we both loved “The Dead.” I wonder what he would have thought if I’d said I also love Dorothy Parker’s short called, I think, “The Standard of Living.” It’s about two secretaries in New York who play a game with each other, fantasizing about what they’d buy if they had a million dollars and had to spend it all on themselves. I won’t spoil the punch line for anyone. But what would Phil have thought? This is a girl who like to shop, even when she’s reading?
