WHERE SOME OF THE STONES FOR STONEHENGE CAME FROM.

WHERE SOME OF THE STONES FOR STONEHENGE CAME FROM. This article by Lauren Kent on the CNN website (February 27, 2019) reports on an announcement that research has traced some of Stonehenge’s smaller stones to locations in two quarries in western Wales some 150 miles from Stonehenge.

A team of geologists has spent eight years matching rock samples from Stonehenge to rocks in the Preseli Hills of Wales. Some of the matching involved crushing samples to powder and making comparisons of the composition of the rocks. In addition to the matching, the team also found supporting evidence of prehistoric tools, stone wedges and digging activity at those locations.

Thank goodness there is further research being done on Stonehenge and people haven’t thrown up their hands in resignation like that stupid audio guide we listened to when we visited Stonehenge in 2003. “We don’t know anything about Stonehenge. It is so mysterious. We imagine druids did religious rites here. The stones are large. Very large. Here are some cracking fire sound effects.” I’m still annoyed about it all these years later.
