BRING YOUR PARENT TO WORK DAY.

BRING YOUR PARENT TO WORK DAY. Ti-Ping Chen has an article in the Wall Street Journal (November 13, 2018) about Take Your Parent to Work Day. The idea is patterned after Bring Your Child to Work Day but the article makes clear that there are more difficulties with brining parents to work. The article juxtaposes the pros and cons. Pro: “Companies see it as a way to please young employees who are close to their moms and dads.” Con: One CEO of a company that has sponsored a day for its employees is quoted: “The workplace is the new soccer field for parents who want to see their children perform.” It is estimated that about one per cent of American employers have a day for parents.

I’ve never heard of this before! However, I have read on Reddit that this latest group of college students and young grads involve their parents in their academics and jobs the way I never imagined. Professors post about how non-zero number of arudents have their parents come in to office hours and argue about their child’s grades. Employers post about how parents try to come into interviews with their offspring, who is in their late teens or early twenties. Sometimes the child is ashamed and sometimes the child is fine with it. I know Nick and I joked about you and Mom being overly involved parents but those antics blow my mind.
