“POTOOOOOOOO”.

“POTOOOOOOOO”. Nick sent us that name because, he says, he knows of our interest in the names of horses. (The first race Mary Jane ever saw live, she was a graduate student working on her dissertation. She bet on a horse called “Term Paper” and won.) This wikipedia entry makes it clear that “Potoooooooo” was quite a good horse and sire. He was bred in 1783 and owned by the 4th Earl of Abingdon. He won roughly thirty out of roughly forty races, mostly in 4 mile (!) races.

There are apparently several stories about how the horse got its name. “In The Jockey Club’s online database equineline.com, the name is spelled as Pot8O’s.The General Stud Book uses Potoooooooo.”

I would have been surprised and amused by this name now, as it is a textual pun of a kind I consider to have developed online in the last 10-15 years. I love that it exists at all, let alone ~240 years ago.
