OLDEST INTACT SHIPWRECK FOUND AT THE BOTTOM OF THE BLACK SEA.

OLDEST INTACT SHIPWRECK FOUND AT THE BOTTOM OF THE BLACK SEA. Nick sent me this article by George Dvorsky on the Gizmodo site about how “a remarkably intact ancient Greek merchant ship from 2,400 years ago has been found at the bottom of the Black Sea.” There is almost no oxygen at that depth so that organic material does not degrade. Carbon dating for the ship gives an estimate of 400 BC.

The wreck has been explored using remotely operated vehicles. Depending on funding, there is much more to be learned about the interior and the contents of the ship.

The Black Sea Maritime Archaeology Project (MAP) project has found 67 wrecks in the past three years. More can be found about the Project here.

67 ships to investigate!
