THE PLAYERS.

THE PLAYERS. It’s a real honor for Mary Jane to have her plays presented at The Players (or “The Players Club” as it is informally known). The Players was created by Edwin Booth in 1888. Edwin Booth was considered the greatest actor of his day, Here is a a brief history of the club. The club is located across from Gramercy Park in an 1847 town house which Edwin Booth bought and deeded to The Players.

“The Players”, as a name, comes from one of the lines in Jaques’s speech in Shakespeare’s As You Like It:

“All the world’s a stage,
And all the men and women merely players….”

Among the incorporators of The Players— in addition to Edwin Booth— were Mark Twain and William Tecumseh Sherman.
