THE LONG-RUNNING WAR BETWEEN CANADA AND DENMARK.

THE LONG-RUNNING WAR BETWEEN CANADA AND DENMARK. I posted here about two war plans from the 1920′s and the 1930′s—–a US plan to invade Canada and a Canadian plan to invade the US.

Annalisa called my attention to this article on the Worldatlas website about a war that is going on now between Canada and Denmark. The dispute is about the ownership of Hans Island, which is smaller than one square mile and uninhabited. The legal issues are complicated. Under international law, a country can claim territorial waters up to 12 miles from its shore. Hans Island is within 12 miles of the shores of Denmark and of Canada. Denmark won a court case back in 1933, but the court was established under the League of Nations and the decision has had no effect.

  1. I need a map, badly! I know where Canada is, and Denmark. How can any island be 12 miles off both of them? What am I missing?

  2. Philip says:

I failed to clarify that Greenland is part of Denmark.
