SOME OF THE THINGS THAT ADRIAN FRUTIGER DID TO SOLVE LEGIBILITY PROBLEMS. Margalit Fox illustrates one of the ways that Adrian Frutiger tackled the “Illinois” problem. His Frutiger typeface uses a square dot over the lower case “”i”. The dot’s angles keep it separate from the stem, so that little “i” will not be confused with small “l” or large “I”. Another way of making letters distinguishable that Frutiger used was to pay attention to the interiors of letters—the white spaces.
