THE VOICE OF THE LITTLE HOUSE BOOKS. I posted here in connection with the voice of Nick Carraway in THE GREAT GATSBY that an astute man in publishing told me once that he had actually looked at the best sellers in America going back to 1900 and one thing they had in common was a distinctive narrative voice—and that this was apparent on the very first pages of the book. I think that the voice that narrates the Little House books is the most important thing about them—and I imagine that the voice of the little girl who tells the story was probably the creation of Laura Ingalls Wilder.
