VOICE—A KEY TO A BEST SELLER. Mentioning the voice of Nick Carraway reminds me that in the seventies I met a man who was in publishing and was very astute. One of the things he said was that he had actually looked at the best sellers in America going back to 1900 and one thing they had in common was a distinctive narrative voice—and that this was apparent on the very first pages of the book.
