“I THINK SHAKESPEAR NEEDS TO TALK IN MODERN ENGLISH, INNIT, BRUV?” (COMMENT). I posted several times (for example, here) in sympathy with the linguist John McWhorter”s argument that Shakespeare’s language should be updated to make it more understandable by modern audiences (My position is qualified. People should have a choice of different versions.) In a comment here, Mary Jane expressed her disagreement, arguing that the beauty of Shakespeare’s language should not be tampered with.
Now there is a new apt and eloquent comment on Mary Jane’s comment: “I think Shakespear needs to talk in modern English, innit, bruv?”
Brilliant. I wasn’t expecting this, bruv. It’s brilliant, innit, blud?
(If Shakespear was modernised to have his plays written in this way, I would go to see it. It would be amazing.)
