A SAFE PREDICTION ABOUT THE CONCLUSION OF THE CLIFF NEGOTIATIONS—AND OTHER NEGOTIATIONS (COMMENT). Dick Weisfelder also points out in his comment that both President Obama and Speaker Boehner have the problem that the public expects “hard positional bargaining”. Generally, in public negotiations, the negotiators emerge at the end to face the cameras, visibly exhausted, and newspapers recount how little sleep both sides have had. They want to show not only how hard they have bargained, but also the physical manifestation of how hard they bargained. So I expect that the result of the current “cliff” negotiations will be accompanied by vivid descriptions of the ferocity of the negotiators.
