THE HARVESTERS AND THE SOLID WORLD.

THE HARVESTERS AND THE SOLID WORLD. One of my favorite paintings is Pieter Bruegel’s The Harvesters at the Metropolitan Museum. Here is a reproduction of it from the googleartproject. There are many reasons to love it, including the subject matter, which is unusual in showing people working. The landscape creates a three-dimensional world. One of the things which adds pleasure for me is that although individual blades of grain at the edges are sketched, the paths through the grain appear to have solid walls leading down into the distance.
