Congratulations. I must admit I actually was hoping they’d win, because I like to see “Big Ben” stuffed.
It’s amazing to me how unanimous it was that non-Steelers fans were rooting for the Packers. I suppose Harrison, Roethlisberger, and to some extent, Ward are loathsome figures. There also seems to be quite a lot of collective goodwill for the Green Bay ownership, Aaron Rodgers for his having put up with the Favre situation, and players like Woodson and Driver.
All championship teams are fun in their own way, but this one was quite special.
Come one Nick! Hard hitters and tough players like Harrison and Ward are what the game is about, but seem fine off the field. (I’m glad the league is moving to restrict helmet to helmet hits.) Big Ben is ok on the field, but a total jerk otherwise.
I don’t think the game is about breaking rookie linebackers’ jaws away from the ball. I thought the game was about scoring more points than your opponent.
In fact, part of why the Steelers lost the Super Bowl is because all their secondary can do is hit really hard and they can’t actually cover anybody. Technique is more important to bringing down a ball carrier than using your helmet as a spear.
I will concede that calling Ward and Harrison “loathsome” might be a little excessive given that up until recently what they were doing was standard practice, and was certainly encouraged by ESPN and the like.
Agreed that the Steeler secondary is quite weak. That’s why the key to the game was neutralizing Polamalu and Harrison which the Packers did brilliantly.
