“FADS”OF THE SIXTIES. Many of the fashion changes in the 60s seemed to be temporary fads, partly because some of them were so dramatic and partly because most people did not adopt them. At the beginning of the 60s, crew cuts were everywhere. The leap by the Beatles to long hair seemed to be something that would soon pass. Forty years later, of course, people who were wearing crew cuts then are wearing pony tails now. Polo shirts (“knit shirts”) started as fashion and became permanent. Blue jeans became appropriate for more and more occasions with each passing year. Bermuda shorts once seemed to be a short-lived joke.
