THE SOUND OF MUSIC AND CULTURAL CONFLICT. I know of one instance where The Sound of Music exposed some of the cultural fissures in America. One of my friends came from a fundamentalist Protestant background. His widowed mother had never seen a movie. Members of her church were not supposed to go to movies. She had heard that The Sound of Music was wonderful wholesome family entertainment. She told her son that she was going to see it in a city some distance away so that nobody she knew would see her. My friend could hardly wait to find out what his mother thought about her first movie. The first thing she said to him, with a happy smile was: “It really gave it to those Catholics, didn’t it?”
