INVENTING REVENGE TO MOTIVATE JOAN OF ARC.

INVENTING REVENGE TO MOTIVATE JOAN OF ARC. If you are making a movie about Joan of Arc, you have a choice of motivations for her extraordinary life. You could focus on the voices she heard, her deep religious conviction, her early sense of French nationalism. Apparently modern movies require something different. Annalisa and Nick sat down to watch a movie from 1999, THE MESSENGER:THE STORY OF JOAN OF ARC, a few years ago and reported to me in astonishment that the movie begins with Joan hiding while an English soldier rapes and murder’s Joan’s older sister. They took a pass on the rest of the movie.

The voices she heard could be evidence of emotional or mental delusion. Clearly, the only thing that causes that is the rape of a sibling.
