PROTOCOL ISSUES. This post from a Slate blog describes the complications that Nicholas Sarkozy’s personal life (making state visits with his mistress, Carla Bruni) has created for protocol officials worldwide. The author quotes a Count at a dinner party suggesting that officials should seek guidance from history; in other words, what was the protocol used for Madame de Pompadour? Apparently the glamor of the new couple is also having an effect on public figures. The article claims that Tony Blair and his wife encountered Sarkozy and Carla Bruni at dinner in Luxor, and Blair’s wife made him go upstairs and change into something fancier.
