BEAUTIFUL LIBRARIES.

BEAUTIFUL LIBRARIES. Books do furnish a room. That is the title of an Anthony Powell novel. Lee Bryant sent me this link, which has pictures of many of the world’s most beautiful libraries. I had a momentary second thought about putting fifteen floor to ceiling bookcases in our basement to absorb most of our books. Two of my favorite spaces in New York are the library in the Morgan Library and the library of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. There is something wonderful about an open space with several stories of books reaching to a high ceiling.

This post reminds me of a most magical scene in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, the one where the Beast shows Belle the castle’s library and announces that it belongs to her. Her breath is taken away, and so is mine, as there are books sweeping across the breadth of the room and filling shelves to a ceiling hundreds of feet high. It’s one of my favorite things about that movie, how the heroine is so bookish. It just so happens that I’ve always daydreamed of having a library in my house someday. One of my favorite things about the new house is the basement library you’ve created, Dad.
