THE USE OF THE CLOCK.

THE USE OF THE CLOCK. I had speculated how Shakespeare on the Sound would use the clock that was so prominent whenever I drove past the stage. What they did was this: two boys came out and moved the hands of the clock and rang a bell to mark the passage of time with each new scene. Once they moved the hands backward and the action on stage was reversed, with the characters even briefly moving backwards, in slow motion. I also liked a number of other touches, including the use of quiz show music in the dialogue in which the servant twin compares a “kitchen-wench” to the countries of the world. The audience, especially the many children in the audience, enjoyed the bits of broad comedy just as Shakespeare’s audience must have done.
