BONFIRES AND ILLUMINATIONS.

BONFIRES AND ILLUMINATIONS. John Adams was thinking of July 2, 1776, the date of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, when he wrote the next day, July 3, 1776, to Abigail: “The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.” Adams was right about all but the date. At our old house, we would walk up to the Darien High School for the fireworks display. The firework displays at the Darien High School have ended because when high school on the old site, they didn’t leave any room for fireworks to land. We’re lucky to be able to walk to Rowayton’s fireworks display, as we did on Sunday.
