THE ROAR OF THE CRICKETS.

THE ROAR OF THE CRICKETS. I noted about a week ago that the roar from seventeen-year cicadas can be as loud as a bulldozer. When my son Nick was almost two, I was reading him a bedtime story. It was a warm September night, and we had the window open. He was clearly disturbed, and I didn’t know why. He somehow made it clear that it was the noise from outside that was bothering him. I said, “They’re just crickets, Nicky.” This did not comfort him. Finally, I realized what the problem was. I asked, “How big is a cricket, Nicky?” “As big as Nicky,” he answered. I showed him how big a cricket is, and he went to sleep.

Please tell me you went outside and caught a cricket to show Nick. That would be so cute.

Speaking of big bugs, my cats found a huge house centipede two nights ago. I’ve read about house centipedes and learned that they start out with six pairs of legs… plus every year they live they add another pair. I would have to estimate this bug at more than seven years old, it was so big and had so many legs. I really hope my cats killed it when I was sleeping; I didn’t stay up to watch.
