THE CONTROVERSY AT THE GLOBE—PRESERVING THE GLOBE EXPERIENCE.

THE CONTROVERSY AT THE GLOBE—-PRESERVING THE GLOBE EXPERIENCE. I posted here about our experience of the Globe. I said: “We saw an all female RICHARD III at the Globe Theater and the actresses playing Richard III [Kathryn Hunter] and Buckingham [Amanda Harris] gave wonderful performances.” I was taking note that the Globe was doing all female productions, just as in the past it had done all male productions.

I didn’t find the need to say then that the Globe is an extraordinary place to watch Shakespeare. Just being in that theater is a wonderful experience. It makes it easier to imagine yourself 400 years back in the past.

The Globe experience can bring in new audience members in the same way that pop music and lighting effects can. I had a friend who saw his first Shakespeare play when he took his family, as tourists, to the Globe. He fell hard in love with Shakespeare there.
