Here is an article by Alexa Keyes, Kate Snow and Wonbo Woo on the NBC News site, which tells about how a 12 year old boy in South Africa was stricken in 1988 with a still unexplained neurodegenerative disease which put him into a coma for three years. This wikipedia entry gives some of the timeline. The boy, Martin Pretorius, recovered full consciousness by around age 19, but could not communicate with anybody in the outside world for another 6 years. Then “a therapist at Pistorius’ care center, Virna Van Der Walt, began to pick up on tiny signals that made her realize he was more aware than people thought.” Therapy began. Martin can communicate now using a computer, has learned to drive, gone to college and got married in 2009. There is a video at the NBC News site.
