FAREWELL TO THE CATCHER IN THE EYE? I posted here that THE CATCHER IN THE RYE doesn’t seem to be as popular with young people now as it was when I was a boy. This headline on an article in The Telegraph—Catcher in the Rye dropped from US school curriculum” suggested at first that Salinger’s book was being dropped because of changing tastes in literature. Not so. Salinger is being dropped because literature in general is being dropped. Literature will be replaced by “informational texts” approved by the Common Core State Standards. The Telegraph says: “Suggested non-fiction texts include Recommended Levels of Insulation by the the US Environmental Protection Agency, and the Invasive Plant Inventory, by California’s Invasive Plant Council.” The change is expected to affect 46 of the 50 states.
