“AH, SOLDIER!” IN PERFORMANCE.

“AH, SOLDIER! IN PERFORMANCE. We saw an excellent production of Antony and Cleopatra at the Hartford Stage Company. (That leaves 6 Shakespeare plays that I have not yet seen.) Of course, after posting on how much T. S. Eliot (and Christopher Ricks and Frank Kermode) admired the line “Ah, Soldier!”, I had been looking forward to how the actress playing Charmian would deliver the line. It passed almost without notice, spoken quietly by a woman as she died. It was perfectly valid in the context of the production.
