MARY JANE’S PRIZE-WINNING STORY. At the time that the movie Single White Female came out, the New York Daily News Sunday section had a regular contest feature edited by Lenore Skenazy. Lenore Skenazy set as the competition for the week the question: what is the strangest experience you ever had with a roommate? When I first met her, Mary Jane was living in an apartment in Queens with two roommates. (The apartment was near Shea Stadium. In fact, a young Mets pitcher lived in the first floor apartment.)Mary Jane’s story: One night Mary Jane came home to find one of her roommates dressed all in white and stirring a rope in a pot of boiling water. The next evening she asked the roommate about it. The roommate got very excited because she said that the figure stirring the water wasn’t her, but some kind of surrogate for her. Mary Jane won first prize in the contest, which was a T shirt with the name of the competition on it. We thought that another prize would be the congratulations of friends and acquaintances, but there weren’t any. Evidently, nobody we knew read the Daily News.
