When I was thinking of going to law school, I talked with an English professor whom I admired. He had started at Harvard Law School, but switched to getting his Ph.D in English. He told me he decided to leave law school in one moment. He saw boy playing carelessly on the back of a passing streetcar and found himself thinking, “If anything happens, who would be liable?” He decided he didn’t want to think that way—and he had spent the rest of his life with Chaucer, Thoreau and other favorites.
