WILLPOWER IS LIKE A MUSCLE. I have an admirably disciplined friend who told me years ago that he finished every shower with very cold water, even though he hated to do so. He believed doing so strengthened his will power. This article by Sandra Aamodt and Sam Wang, two neuroscientists, says that behavioral psychologists have come up with support for my friend’s belief. “In psychological studies, even something as simple as using your nondominant hand to brush your teeth for two weeks can increase willpower capacity.” Sticking to an exercise program for two months will enable you to study more and watch less television. The authors say that the increase in willpower must be connected to some biological change in the brain.
