CONDITIONING BACK IN THE DAY—SLEEP AND WEIGHT LIFTING.

CONDITIONING BACK IN THE DAY—SLEEP AND WEIGHT LIFTING. Hawk Harrelson, the baseball announcer, was reminiscing recently about the macho, hard-drinking code of the veteran players when he broke in to the majors in 1963. Rookies were expected to join in the drinking. Yet, he said, drinking was not the most important factor in shortening careers. It was lack of sleep. Harrelson also remarked that baseball players in the sixties were forbidden to lift weights.

I can’t imagine being an athlete without lifting weights. In high school the varsity girls’ soccer team would routinely visit the weight room. Did the baseball players of the sixties appear obviously stringier/less bulky than players of today?
