LES MIS AND THE CRITICS.

LES MIS AND THE CRITICS. We enjoyed the televised 25th anniversary concert version of Les Miserables. Cameron Mackintosh and some of the original cast came on at the end. Of course, I have been telling again a favorite story about the opening of Les Mis in London. I remember Mackintosh telling the story as follows: The first night reviews were savage and Mackintosh called the theater to begin the process of closing the show after its original booking was over. Except he couldn’t get through. After a couple of hours of trying, he went to the theater. There was a long queue, and the box office told him that the reason he couldn’t get through was that their phone was ringing off the hook. It was all word of mouth. I looked up the story on google, and this is the best account I found of what happened. There had been a few favorable reviews, but basically the story is accurate.
