CHIC AREAS IN NEW YORK REVISITED. The Economist section on nomads refers to the “chic area around New York’s Union Square.” Kids, that was not the way Union Square was back in the 70’s when we lived near it. The City made one effort to clear people who were considered undesirables out of Union Square Park. There was so much protest from adjoining neighborhoods that the policy was reversed and Union Square Park reverted to its original state.
