JACK KEROUAC’S RULES FOR LIFE. I had not known until I saw the Jack Kerouac exhibit at the New York Public Library that “beat” had its roots in the word “beatific.” Kerouac had distinctive ideas about life as well as about writing. Many of Kerouac’s list of 30 essentials for Spontaneous Prose that I posted on here can be considered rules which apply to life as well. For example, Number 19: “Accept loss forever.” Number 23: “Keep track of every day the date emblazoned in yr morning.” And number 3: “Try never get drunk outside your own house.”
