THE LUPERCAL. Archeologists have released photographs of the Lupercal. The photographs are of a cave that the Romans thought was the place where Romulus and Remus were nursed by the wolf. The site is underneath the Palatine Hill, which is adjacent to the Roman Forum. Augustus restored the cave (presumably that is how the mosaics in the pictures got there), and it is beneath his palace. The photographs were taken without making an effort to excavate the site. Excavation will evidently be very tricky because the site is so near other items of great archeological interest. It is exciting to think that there are so many discoveries about the period 2000 years ago—or even 3000 years ago— that are still to be made.
