PROFESSOR KAGAN AND THE SOCRATIC METHOD. In honor of Nick’s planning to go to law school in the fall, I sent him this story from a former student in Professor Elena Kagan’s class in civil procedure. (Professor Kagan has now been nominated for the Supreme Court.) The student says: “Professor Kagan massacred me intellectually, and brutalized my pride.” The Socratic Method is controversial as can be seen from the comments here on the Ann Althouse blog. I am a big fan of the Socratic Method, and I side with Professor Kagan here. This is a perfectly normal part of the law school experience.
