WISDOM FROM LEFTY GROVE [SIC].

WISDOM FROM LEFTY GROVE [SIC]. Lefty Grove [SIC] was a Hall of Fame pitcher who was much quoted. One story about him reflects how much time some pitchers could take back in the day. There were men on base in a close game. Gomez shook off every pitch the catcher called for and seemed more interested in an airplane flying overhead. The catcher came out to to talk to him, and Gomez explained: “I’ve figured out that if I don’t throw it, he can’t hit it.” This site has a quote related to this story and other famous quotes, including: ““The secret of my success was clean living and a fast outfield.”

Lefty Gomez, not Grove, right? Grove wouldn’t have been worried about getting hit!

Yes! Thanks. A senior moment. For nonfans, Lefty Grove and Lefty Gomez were both great pitchers, but the last time I looked Bill James rated Lefty Grove as the best pitcher of all time. I’m going to mark the errors with [sic].
