HOOTERVILLE THEATER REVIEWS. Terry Teachout in the article discussed in yesterday’s post argued that critics should be knowledgeable and competent and that bloggers cannot substitute for expert critics. He cites Richard Schickel’s opinion that critics should have credentials. My first reaction was that we have all around the country lots of theater goers who are well educated and have seen a lot of theater and whose opinions are valuable. But then I remembered the review Mary Jane got when she appeared in a local production of THE CHERRY ORCHARD as Liubov Ranevskaya (the lady who owns the cherry orchard). Mary Jane was flummoxed when the reviewer complained about Mary Jane’s performance at some length on the grounds that Mary Jane should have sold the cherry orchard.
