FITBIT CONTESTS.

FITBIT CONTESTS. The front page of the Wall Street Journal often reports on novel sports—for example, wife carrying, Irish road bowling, or noodling. This Journal article by Rachel Bachman (June 10) reports on Fitbit contests to see who can take the most steps in a week or other time period. The steps are counted by a new computer gadget which the competitors wear, the Fitbit.

Rachel Bachman’s article focuses on ways that competitors have used to increase their step count without walking: taping the Fitbit to the blade of an electric saw, clipping the Fitbit to a hamster wheel, attaching the Fitbit to a ceiling fan.

One trick is common enough that it has been measured: Dogs typically take between 13,000 and 30,00 steps in a day.
