SUMMARIZING EVIDENCE FOR THE BIG BANG. This review by Ross Pomeroy on the NewtonBlog describes three problems that the Big Bang theory can’t explain. Pomeroy begins by summarizing the evidence for the Big Bang. (I began this blog with this post on evidence for the Big Bang that is present in the night sky). The review is of Ethan Siegel’s recent book BEYOND THE GALAXY. Pomeroy quotes Siegel: “To this very day, there is no other model that is both consistent with General Relativity and explains the Hubble expansion of the Universe, the abundances of the light elements and the existence and properties of the cosmic microwave background; the Big Bang is the only one.”
I find it hard to believe that we can know so much about an event that took place about 13.8 billion years ago, so let me rearrange that quote to emphasize how much evidence there is for the Big Bang:
“To this very day, there is no other model that is both
consistent with General Relativity and
explains the Hubble expansion of the Universe,
the abundances of the light elements and
the existence and properties of the cosmic microwave background; the Big Bang is the only one.”
