THE FACE BOOK 500 RATHER THAN THE FORTUNE 500? Could General Motors be run more along Wikipedia or Facebook principles? Would some of the big troubled banks have been more prudent if the risk management function had followed those principles? I started asking these questions after Dick and Chris Weisfelder called my attention to this article by Gary Hamel which analyzes some of the contrasts in the thinking of the Facebook generation which differs sharply from the hierarchical world that I worked in. Consider just a couple of his twelve points: …”3. Hierarchies are natural, not prescribed.” and… “5.Tasks are chosen, not assigned…. Completely different from General Motors. And yet Wikipedia is a triumph.
