A MAJOR STORY THAT WASN’T REPORTED.

A MAJOR STORY THAT WASN’T REPORTED. A veteran sports writer tells here how he had had evidence for a long time that steroids were being used by a star baseball player and had not reported it. The player is Mike Piazza and the evidence was that Piazza’s back was covered with acne. The journalist says: “Now as naïve as I might have been about steroids, the one thing I knew was that use of steroids supposedly causes the user to have acne on his back.” This side effect of steroid use must have been apparent to everybody in the locker room—and to every journalist in the locker room. And if there were 104 confirmed drug tests for steroid use, then surely some of those users must have had acne on their backs and journalists in the locker room would have seen the acne. And yet for a long time, nothing was written about what must have been widely known. (If privacy for an individual was a concern, the story could have been written without naming names). The journalist says that he tried to write about Piazza’s acne-covered back after steroid use became a daily subject in the newspaper, but his editor refused to print the story.
