THE FASTEST WAY TO TRAVEL IN THE YEAR 500.

THE FASTEST WAY TO TRAVEL IN THE YEAR 500. “Men of the steppes moved across the map at speeds unimaginable for human transport anywhere else in the world.” I am quoting James O’Donnell in a book Annalisa gave me for Christmas, THE RUIN OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE, which deals with the period from 300 A.D. to 600 A.D. O’Donnell begins his story of the barbarian invasions by saying, “Look first at the map of Eurasia and see the superhighway from …the Ukraine…to China.” What we think of as the barbarian invasions resulted from groups on horseback moving at great speed along this “superhighway.”

I’m seeing that speed of movement is still critical in warfare, and I’m not sure that it will ever go away. Studying World War I, the Germans were able to fight a two-front war successfully against the Russians as they were able to move far more quickly than the Russians were.

Meanwhile, every time the Russians encountered the less-organized Austrians, the Russians steamrolled them.
