The dish was part of our family Thanksgivings since the mid fifties, when it was invented. Thanksgiving is the unique American holiday and green bean casserole is a characteristic American dish.
It even has the virtue of puzzling people from other countries. I posted here about a French friend who planned to send a photograph of a green bean casserole to friends back in France to show the strange things that Americans eat. She has since become a convert to the green bean casserole.
