ELEPHANTS AND BEES—BEE FENCES. Apparently, bees are the only species (except for humans) that elephants are afraid of. This wikipedia entry describes bee hive fences, which consist of a single strand of wire connecting bee hives set ten yards apart. If an elephant disturbs the fence, then the hives shake, the bees become agitated, and the elephants are deterred by even the sound of buzzing. Bee hive fences are a recent innovation, having been invented by Lucy King, a worker at Save the Elephants. There are now bee fences in a number of countries and apparently they are a great success in protecting crops.
