“GOMAN YOUNG WEST”.

“GOMAN YOUNG WEST”. Among the possibilities for Scrabble vocabularies would be to permit puns or wordplay as part of the Agreed Dictionary—the kinds of words that appear in British crossword puzzles. I had forgotten until now that one afternoon when we were teenagers my brother Elmer, a friend, and I—after several games of regular Scrabble—devised a new form of Scrabble where any word was permitted if you could offer a definition that the other players accepted. (I think that we had had some difficult letter combinations to work with in earlier games).

Among the words which were voted acceptable were “AVUG”, defined as “AVUG” is “AVEETLE”; and “GOMAN”, defined by refernce to Horace Greely’s first draft: “GOMAN YOUNG WEST.”
