HOT WEATHER IS LEADING TO ARCHAEOLOGICAL DISCOVERIES. I am always excited by the discovery of new archaeological sites. This article by Chris Baynes at the Independent website describes finds by aerial archaeologists that have been enabled by a current heat wave in England. Apparently differences in color or height of crops and grass can reveal the locations of buried ditches or walls—even from as far back as 3600BC. These “cropmarks” are much better defined when the soil has less moisture, as in a heat wave. The article has a number of photographs of cropmarks seen from the air.
Some of the finds include a Roman farm and Iron Age barrows. The last previous year with as many findings was 2011 when over 1500 sites were discovered—-all of which confirms my impression that if you dig anywhere in Britain you will find evidence of the past.
