JUSTIFICATIONS FOR THE BIZARRE EXTRA INNING RULE. I have seen justifications in several places for trying to eliminate long extra inning games in the minor leagues. One is that minor league pitchers are young with vulnerable arms, and a long game is going to put a burden on somebody in the bullpen.
A second justification is more plausible. Apparently a lot of fans leave after the regulation seven or nine innings. This means that concession stands bring in reduced revenue. At the same time payments to ushers and other support personnel continue until the game is over and parking lots are cleared. Extra inning games are money losers for a lot of minor league teams.
